Nokaut's Adrenaline MMA Report

Pre-fight interviews from Jason Guida, Mike Russow open the show with both guys talking about what they want to do in the fight and Russow says he's representing Chicago as a Chicago PD officer. Kenny Rice introduces us to the Sears Center and welcomes us to Adrenaline MMA! He talks about Monte Cox using the big name fighters in the Midwest to fill out his promotion and here comes EL GUAPO!! They talk about the main event fight and how Guida has a ton of experience and is a submission artist. They bring up Russow's fight at Yarennoka and how he pulled out the win with the north/south choke. Bas builds up his five-fight winning streak and Bas says that it's going to be experience vs. hunger. They throw it to Ron Kruck who's with Mike Russow. He asks Russow if the gameplan has changed from Jeff Monson to Jason Guida. Russow says no change and he's going to take him down and ground and pound him. Kruck asks if this is the fight that Russow makes a statement that he's arrived. Russow says that he wants to put on a show for his fans and show off his skills. He puts over Guida as a tough fighter and Kruck throws it back to Kenny and Bas cageside. They talk about Terry Martin, Bart Palaszewski and Rory Markham also being on the card, showing highlights from Markham and Palaszewski from their IFL careers. We get a rundown of the rules and it's the unified MMA rules, with no elbows of any kind, no blows to the back of the head and no kicks to a downed opponent. The camera cuts to a wide shot and we see a bunch of empty seats on the floor of the arena which isn't a good sign.  Bas talks about how the local guys are going to be fired up because they will want to put on great performances in their hometowns.

Match One: Welterweights
Joe Jordan (42-11-2) vs. Ryan Williams (8-1)

Jordan comes to the cage looking calm and ready and Kenny Rice brings up that he's won eighteen of his last nineteen fights and puts over Jordan's resume and all of the tough guys that he has fought against. Jordan has fought to draws against Josh Neer and Roger Huerta and losses to Clay Guida and Bart Palaszewski. Oh christ, Big Poppa Schnake is the ring announcer and for any of you who have read my stuff before, you know my disdain for that clown. Williams lost his pro debut to Rory Markham in 2004 but has won eight straight fights since then. They're only two years apart in age but Jordan has nearly forty more fights than Williams has. I will say that at least Schnake isn't wearing his stupid fucking kilt tonight.

Round One

Leg kicks land for Williams and Jordan catches one and throws Willams to the mat, landing a couple of shots before allowing Williams back to his feet. Right hook lands for Williams but Jordan shrugs it off, taking another one as well as he holds his hands near his waist. Leg kicks for Williams and Jordan looks to be trying to time a counter on them. They trade jabs and punches that miss and Jordan catches another leg kick and tries to push Williams down again. Good combination lands for Jordan and he follows it up with a solid right hook of his own while Williams just misses an uppercut. Straight right comes up just short from Williams and they're clinched against the fence with Williams trying some short knees inside. He pushes out of the clinch with a combination and lands a couple of shots before backing off to circle. Williams lands a leg kick and Jordan responds with one of his own before hitting a HARD right hook to the body. Inside leg kick lands for Jordan and Williams misses with the straight right again as they continue to circle with the crowd getting on them a little. Two right hands for Jordan land and he tries to catch the leg kick again but can't do it and they trade a little before Williams shoots in with a single-leg. Jordan sprawls away from it well and fights it off against the cage, leading to a clinch. Williams changes levels again and Jordan shows great balance until he gives up the takedown with five seconds left in the round.

Round Analysis: Not a ton of action in this opening round, but Jordan was landing some solid shots. Williams had the striking advantage early, controlled the cage and got the takedown so I'd give the round to him.

Round Two

They touch gloves to start the round and Jordan lands that hard hook to the body again with Williams landing one of his own in return. Inside leg kick from JOrdan and a wild overhand right that misses and they end up just circling and feinting for a moment before Jordan unloads with a combination that gets blocked. Leg kick from Jordan and Williams lands a shot to the body before dropping a good right hand in. Another hard right hook to the body lands from Jordan and he follows it up with a combination as the crowd starts to boo a little louder. Right to the body left to the head from Jordan and Williams lands a WICKED shot that Jordan just absorbs and takes. Jordan starts taunting Williams' perceived lack of power and they do a little more circling before Williams lands a solid kick to the body. Right hook to the body and a good jab from Jordan and he loads up the right hand again but it gets blocked. Combination to the body lands for Jordan and the crowd is REALLY starting to get on them now. Leg kick from Wiliams lands and they flurry back and forth with some shots but there's nothing of consequence. They clinch and Williams gets a knee on the inside as Jordan unleashes a flurry of HARD shots with a few of them landing. Blood coming from Williams' nose now and they trade combinations that miss before Jordan tries an AXE PUNCH!! They end up clinched and trading body shots to end the round.

Round Analysis:
Another round that was all Jordan. Williams tried to stem the tide but just couldn't get any momentum going and has taken a lot of punishment to the body thus far. Two rounds to none for Jordan.

Round Three

They touch gloves for round three and Jordan catches Williams with a short right hand off of a leg kick and they circle with Jordan landing a leg kick and a combination inside. Jordan gets a strong right and eats a counter left hand from Williams before they circle. Jordan lands the hard body punch AGAIN with the right hook and they slow down again with Jordan landing some jabs and the crowd booing a little. Williams tries a combination but it's all blocked by Jordan and he responds with a good overhand right as Williams throws a leg kick. Short uppercut just misses for Williams and he throws a weak leg kick to follow that up. Overhand right from Jordan gets blocked by Williams and there's a LOT of blood from the corner of Williams right eye. Jordan loads up a combination that gets blocked and Williams tries for a takedown but gets it stuffed right in the middle of the cage. Williams with a good combination but it's really going to be too little, too late as Jordan sneaks a right hand in over the top. The crowd boos again as Jordan works the body with hard jabs and hooks before getting a good left hook to the head. Jordan to the body again and again as Williams lands a knee to the head. Jordan continues to work the body as Williams tries for another clinch into a takedown but Jordan stuffs it and shoves him off, landing a solid combination at the end of the round

Winner: Joe Jordan, Unanimous Decision

Fight Analysis: A somewhat boring and lackluster opening fight. Jordan did what he had to do to win but didn't come close to finishing and didn't seem to want to come close to finishing. He stayed out of trouble and landed some good punches but there wasn't a lot of excitement in the fight.

Match Two: Lightweights
Clay French (15-2) vs. Jameel Massouh (16-3)

Massouh makes an entrance with Led Zeppelin and he's 5-3 in his last eight fights after winning the first eleven bouts of his career. French comes to the cage looking ANGRY!! He's a member of the HIT squad, training with Matt Hughes, and he has Clay Guida working his corner for this fight. French has had an interesting career, winning his first eight, losing two in a row and then reeling off seven straight wins since. He's fought Shinya Aoki (a loss) and Mac Danzig (a win) in his career.

Round One

They touch gloves and Massouh lands a good front kick to the body before showing good takedown defense to block a French attempt. French throws a high kick that just misses and then misses with a combination of punches before they end up in a bodylock clinch against the fence. French changes levels and tries for a double-leg, pulling Massouh down to the mat. Massouh immediately pulls it to rubber guard and lands a couple of strikes from the bottom before French gets a good left hand in. French with a hard shot to the face with a left again as Massouh tries an armbar from the bottom. French pulls free and passes to half-guard and continues to hold down Massouh as he presses him against the fence. Massouh gets to his feet and then EATS a hard left hand as French drags him back down to the mat. Massouh on his side and taking a good beating from French in the half-guard but he manages to get things back to the full guard. That doesn't save him though as French continues to hammer away with punches. French works from the half-guard again before he moves to side control but Massouh gets the fight back to its feet. Body kick from Massouh lands but he takes a solid left hook from French and they circle with thirty seconds left in the round. French lands the left hand again and misses another high kick before getting another takedown right at the bell.

Round Analysis: ALL French. The strikes, the takedowns, the ground and pound, it was all French and he did a ton of damage with the ground and pound in the middle of the round.

Round Two

They touch gloves and Massouh tries the front kick again before landing a body kick. They slow and circle as French LOADS up the left hand but whiffs on it. Massouh lands another kick to the body and French catches one, pulling the fight into a clinch against the fence. Massouh eats a short left hand from the clinch and French changes levels for another double-leg takedown against the fence. French nearly gets pushed away by Massouh but lands a MONSTER left hand before dropping back into the guard. French stands out of the guard and dives back in with another good left hand that lands and he continues to punish from the half-guard. French moves to side control and holds Massouh down, taking the back and sinking in both hooks. He tries for the rear naked choke but Massouh does well to defend it. French tries for the choke again and manages to get it under Massouh's jaw and forces him to tap!!

Winner: Clay French, submission (rear naked choke) at 3:18 of Round Two

Fight Analysis: A dominant performance from French after a long layoff against a tough opponent in Massouh. He overwhelmed and dominated, using his strength and wrestling to set up everything else and eventually end the fight. Huge win for French in a fight that ended up a lot more one-sided than most people thought it would be.

Ron Kruck is in the crowd with Andrei Arlovski and he congratulates Andrei on the Affliction signing. Andrei says that himself and his team decided that it was time to move on and that he wanted to try to fight for a new promotion. Kruck talks about guys leaving the UFC on bitter terms and asks Arlovski how he left. Andrei avoids the question entirely and talks about his fight with Ben Rothwell and talks about how tough and strong Rothwell is. Andrei feels like it's a tough fight for him but he wants to fight the best fighters in the world in his division.

Match Three: Catchweight
Rory Markham (14-4)  vs. Jay Ellis (11-15)

Ellis gets booed on his way to the cage since he's fighting the hometown boy and Kenny Rice tries to talk away Ellis' record by saying that he's had some tough fights. Ellis' last win was last weekend when he won by first round submission. He's fought and lost to Bart Palaszewski in his career as well and he enters the cage doing a front roll into some Bas Rutten jumping splits!! The crowd chants for Rory as he makes his way to the cage with some Dropkick Murphys blasting through the PA. They talk about Markham's rough patch of fights in the IFL before talking about how he's battling back from an injury. Markham's got about a twenty-pound weight advantage heading into this one.

Round One

Ellis comes out from the bell with a FLYING KNEE AND HE GOES UP AND OVER MARKHAM!! Markham on top in half-guard and he hammers away with some short right hands as Ellis gets a SWEET sweep by pushing off of the cage. Markham works from the full guard and slips his legs up for a triangle choke attempt as Ellis rains down some punches. Markham slowly slides it down and sinks it in all the way and forces Ellis to tap out!!!

Winner: Rory Markham, submission (triangle choke) at 0:58 of Round One

Fight Analysis: Quick and entertaining. Markham wanted the KO, but Ellis essentially handed him that triangle choke. The flying knee overshoot thing was kind of bad-ass though. Great win for Markham to get back on the horse, but it doesn't really say anything about whether he's back to his old self before the injuries and losses.

Ron Kruck's got Rory Markham in the cage and Rory talks about how he wanted to stand and give the crowd a show before shouting out Chicago. He says that it's a move that he's practiced and pumps up the crowd again. He says that he was surprised when Ellis jumped over him and decided that he needed to keep the fight on the ground. Kruck asks where his next fight will be with the IFL's financial troubles and he says that he'll fight for Adrenaline and Monte Cox any time they want him to.

Match Four: Lightweights
Bart Palaszewski (28-11) vs. Jeff Cox (9-6)

Cox calmly makes his way to the cage and we see that he started his career 5-0 but has hit a rough patch, going 4-6 in his last ten fights. He has fought some big names with Thiago Alves and Gleison Tibau on his record, though both fights were losses. Palaszewski comes to the cage, looking pretty calm for entering into a fight that is as big as this one for him. He's got Jeff Curran in his corner and Bas and Kenny talk about his losses to Clay Guida and Gesias Calvancante before bringing up that he's 0-3 in his last three fights. Way to build him up guys.

Round One

They touch gloves and circle, trading misses on punches before Cox lands a stiff jab. Cox shoots in for a double-leg and gets the takedown, moving immediately to side control but Palaszewski gets it right back to full guard. Palaszewski controls from the bottom and throws a couple of shots but there's not a lot happening on the mat at the moment. Cox starts pistoning some good left hands in as Palaszewski is pressed against the fence and then gets another flurry in before Palaszewski controls him again. It continues with flurries from Cox and control from Palaszewski back and forth with Cox doing a lot of work on the body with right hands before holding Palaszewski against the fence to land four or five HARD right hands in a row. A minute left in the round and the pace on the mat slows, prompting referee Herb Dean to stand them back up. Cox backs away from a combination and flashes a high kick up that misses before he DROPS PALASZEWSKI WITH A RIGHT HAND!!! Palaszewski recovers almost immediately and controls Cox with his guard to avoid any more damage before the bell sounds.

Round Analysis: Cox won this round big with the takedown, the ground and pound and then the big knockdown right at the end of the round. That was a huge right hand and Palaszewski's got a hell of a chin to have  withstood that one to survive the round. This could have been a 10-8 round and I wouldn't complain too loudly if someone scored it as that.

Round Two

Palaszewski throws a combination to start the round and begins to pace down Cox, ducking away from a big Cox combination. A lunging left hand from Palaszewski misses and Cox misses an overhand right before Palaszewski shoots in for a takedown. Cox stuffs the attempt and they go back to circling with them both throwing some feints before Cox tries a takedown attempt. Palaszewski stuffs that and they trade some heavy punches in the middle of the cage with neither man landing anything cleanly. Cox tries for another takedown but gets stopped again and Palaszewski lands a HARD body kick and a good left hook to the body before getting those body kicks to land again and again. Cox throws a wild overhand right that misses and chases after Palaszewski a little before Palaszewski lands a leg kick. Hook to the body lands for Palaszewski and HE NEARLY TAKES COX'S HEAD OFF WITH A RIGHT HIGH KICK!! BEAUTIFUL KNOCKOUT!!!

Winner: Bart Palaszewski, KO (head kick) at 3:10 of Round Two

Fight Analysis: Palaszewski really pulled one out of the fire there because he was in serious danger of going two rounds to none down in the fight. He turned it on midway through the round and then just kept working the body until the head opened up and he landed that brutal head kick. Huge win for Palaszewski because one more loss in a row could have been devastating to his career.

Ron Kruck has Palaszewski in the cage and Bart talks about he was looking for a KO or submisson. He talks about how hard the camp was for him and how he ended up injured during it before he talks through the replay, putting over his kicks to the body that were working and how they set up the high kick. Kruck wishes him a Happy Father's Day after the recent birth of his daughter and he thanks everyone for their support.

Match Five: Welterweights
Brian Gassaway (28-17-2, 1 NC) vs. Forrest Petz (11-5)

Petz makes his way to the cage first and Bas and Kenny talk about how Petz is mainly a stand-up fighter. We see his wins over Sam Morgan and Luigi Fioravanti get highlighted, as well as his losses to Marcus Davis and Josh Burkman. Petz has lost three of his last four fights though, so he needs to get a big win to get back on track here. Gassaway comes to the cage and looks intense. He's a hometown boy and they talk about how Gassaway has been fighting since 1996. They highlight his losses to Diego Sanchez and Ikuhisa Minowa while talking about his longevity in the MMA game.

Round One

Petz throws a good leg kick to start out and another before they both trade haymakers that miss. Gassaway with a good jab and they exchange more punches before Petz pushes Gassaway up against the fence with a clinch. They trade positions on the cage and Gassaway lands some shoulder strikes while pressuring Petz. They swap positions again and then push away with Petz missing a roundhouse left hand. Petz pushes forward with a combination that misses and they continue to circle with no one landing anything. Good short combination from Gassaway lands and he gets a solid left follow-up that stuns Petz. Gassaway with a body kick that lands and he gets a HUGE left uppercut that DROPS PETZ!! GASSAWAY JUMPS ON AND HAMMERS AWAY BUT PETZ SURVIVES!! Gassaway continues to just hammer away from the mount and Petz gives up his back with a minute left in the round. Gassaway gets the hooks in and tries the rear naked choke before moving back to the mount with a succession of rights and lefts that force Petz back to his stomach. Gassaway tries the choke again right at the end of the round but he can't close it off and the round comes to a close.

Round Analysis:
Gassaway did everything BUT finish the fight. That was a great first round for him with a heavy left hand and a ton of punishment afterwards but Petz showed a great chin and great survival skills to stay in the fight. Round one EASILY goes to Gassaway.

Round Two

Petz lands a good jab to start the round and they circle a little, throwing single punches with no connections. Petz just misses a right hand after catching Gassaway with a short left hand and Petz moves forward with more good jabs. Petz grabs a clinch but Gassaway ends up on top in the half-guard. Petz gets it back to full guard and controls Gassaway before locking in a guillotine choke attempt. Petz lets it go to try to get back to his feet but he can't do it and he settles for landing a couple of short punches off of his back. Petz throws a high guard up for a second and the pace has REALLY slowed down here with Gassaway laying on top and Petz landing some short punches until the referee stands them back up. Petz gets a good right hand that throws Gassaway off-balance and then puts together a good one-two combination to follow it up. Gassaway reaches with a left hand and misses and they go back to circling before Petz rushes forward into a double-leg takedown. Petz lands a couple of short punches from the top before he stands above Gassaway and swing passes to side control for a moment. Gassaway gets it back to full guard and controls Petz though he postures up to land some shots right before the bell.

Round Analysis: Petz took this round with his aggression and the takedown as Gassaway looked like he completely took that round off. They're one round apiece heading into the third and final round!

Round Three

They touch gloves and trade jabs before Petz rushes forward with a combination. Leg kick lands from Petz and they circle before Petz gets a good right hook/left hook combination in. Petz is bleeding from the bridge of the nose but it doesn't affect him as he lands a body kick on Gassaway. Gassaway with a good short left hook and he misses a front kick to follow as Petz is taking the center of the cage and pressing forward. They trade jabs again and Petz misses a combination before eating a good left hand from Gassaway. Petz pushes forward and gets a solid double-leg takedown into side control before he takes the full mount on Gassaway for a moment. Gassaway shows solid hip movement to get the fight back to full guard though before Petz can do any damage. Gassaway has a HUGE knot on the top of his forehead as Petz postures up to land more strikes before passing into side control again. Gassaway gets it back to guard as Petz lands a short left hand and the referee stands them up with fifteen seconds left in the fight. Petz lands a leg kick and Gassaway lands a SPINNING BACK FIST right at the bell!!

Winner: Forrest Petz, Unanimous Decision

Fight Analysis: A good win for Petz and he showed some heart by taking that beating in the first round and coming back from that to get the win. He didn't do anything spectacular in the two rounds he won, but he did just enough in them to win the rounds. A solid win for Petz against a game and experienced fighter in Gassaway. The crowd didn't like the decision at all, but it was the right decision.

Ron Kruck has an interview with some members of the World Association of Mixed Martial Arts, including Pat Miletich. They put over WAMMA as the main body for MMA and that Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia are going to fight for the WAMMA Undisputed Heavyweight Championship. That and a quarter will get them a cup of coffee I assume.

Match Six: Middleweights
Daiju Takase (7-11-1) vs. Terry Martin (16-4)

Takase I remember from his debut fight at PRIDE 3 against 600-pound plus Emmanuel Yarbrough, a fight that Takase won by TKO. Takase even gives a little wink to the camera as he gets ready to step into the cage. Calm as a cucumber getting ready to fight the hometown boy. He's got a spotty record but he has wins over Carlos Newton and Anderson Silva. Martin comes out to his customary "Beat It" entrance as the arena goes completely dark. Bas sings along to the song, which entertains me to no end. They talk about Martin's big wins over guys like Jorge Rivera and Ivan Salaverry as well as his losses against James Irvin and Chris Leben while putting over his career in the UFC and how tough a fighter he is.

Round One

Takase rushes forward with a combination into a clinch and tries for a takedown but can't get it and they end up separating into the middle of the cage. Takase eats a right hand and goes down but he doesn't look too hurt by it and the fight restarts on the feet again. Martin pushes forward with some jabs and misses a follow-up right hand before popping Takase with another hard punch. Martin lands a HARD left hook that pushes Takase against the cage and he flurries with some shots but can't put the tough Japanese fighter away. Takase lands a low kick and tries to throw a high kick but Martin blocks it before stuffing a Takase takedown attempt. Takase tried to pull guard but can't get the fight to the ground and gets DROPPED by a big right hand from Martin. That one hurt him pretty good and he's slow to get back to his feet. Right hand to the body and another right hand to the head from Martin and Takase gets forced backwards by a hard jab. Takase tries a rolling kick that misses and gets stood back up by the referee as both men circle in the middle of the cage. Takase tries a high kick again that gets blocked and shoots in for a single-leg but it gets blocked by Martin and they go back to circling and whiffing on punches before Takase gets an inside leg kick that lands right on THE BALLS. OUCH. Martin looks in real pain and the doctor comes in to take a look at him. Martin gets checked out and seems ok as the two fighters touch gloves and trade combinations before the bell with both guys throwing punches after the bell.

Round Analysis: Martin dominated the round before and after the ballshot and that was probably a 10-8 round with him knocking Takase down twice. Martin looks good, but it's too soon to tell if the low blow will affect his stamina at all in the next rounds.

Round Two

They touch gloves and Takase gets a low kick that's a little close to the cup. Martin's bleeding under his right eye as Takase shoots for a takedown and Martin stuffs it to get the fight back to its feet. Martin pushes forward with a combination and they circle a little before trading combinations that miss. Martin gets a good straight right hand that stuns Takase and Takase fires back with low kick number two that gets ALL CUP!! Martin complains to the referee and the referee says that he's going to take a point away from Takase. Martin paces in his corner and looks to be near tears. They restart the fight and touch gloves with Takase landing another leg kick on the inside of the leg. Another leg kick lands for Takase and he shoots in for a takedown that Martin sprawls out of. Martin holds onto a front facelock and works the body with some solid punches before trying for a guillotine choke. Martin lets go of it and just pushes away to get Takase back to his feet. Takase gets a good left hand and a combination that follows before hitting another low kick on the inside of Martin's thigh. Martin fires back with a hard shot to the body and they cricle before Takase gets another low kick that is literally a PUNT to the groin. Martin looks like he wants to throw up and the referee stops the fight. Takase is pissed, flinging his mouthpiece to the mat as the crowd boos at the finish.

Winner: Terry Martin, disqualification (illegal groin strikes) at 3:35 of Round Two

Fight Analysis:
A weird way to end the fight, but understandable considering the damage that Martin took from the groin strikes. Martin was in control and didn't look like he was going to be in any danger of losing the fight. Takase wasn't going to do anything and I don't think that Martin was going to be able to finish. Not a very impressive performance from Martin.

Ron Kruck is with Terry Martin and he says that Takase kept kicking him in the groin and that it couldn't keep happening. Martin talks about how he's been working on his sprawl and that he's happy with his takedown defense. He says that he's disappointed but a win is a win.

Match Seven: Heavyweights
Jason Guida (19-16, 2 NC) vs. Mike Russow (9-1)

Guida comes to the cage with Pantera rocking and looks like a larger version of his brother Clay. he's won seven of his last ten fights and has a big win over Marvin Eastman, as well as a first-round submission loss to Thales Leites on his record. He gets a good round of applause entering the cage before the lights go down for Mike Russow to make his way down the aisle. The crowd chants "Roooo", which sounds a lot like boos before you realize what they're saying. Russow's only loss in his career is to Sergei Kharitonov in PRIDE. Funny moment as Russow comes to the cage with the COPS theme song playing. Shame it doesn't have that cool guy doing the voice-over too.

Round One

Referee Herb Dean signals for the bell and they touch gloves with Guida landing a good combination right off the bat. Russow moves to a clinch against the fence and drops for a takedown but Guida defends it well. Standing guillotine attempt by Russow but he lets it go and they end up back in the clinch. Russow gets a single-leg into a takedown, pressing Guida up against the fence. Guida gets back to his feet and Russow tries the standing guillotine again before landing a good right hook and right uppercut. Russow gets another takedown and Guida gets right back to his feet. Russow presses Guida against the fence with a nasty-looking neck crank and Guida is forced to tap!!

Winner: Mike Russow, submission (neck crank) at 2:13 of Round One

Fight Analysis:
Impressive performance from Russow, though to be fair, he was fighting someone who hadn't fought in fifteen months. I don't know if that means a whole heck of a lot, but Russow looks like he has a ton of potential based on this performance and his fight against Roman Zentsov at Yarennoka. Strong win with a brutal submission hold for Russow.
